Candle Care

How to take care of your candle

A few simple habits make a big difference: a cleaner burn, better scent throw, and a longer-lasting candle. Please always follow the safety label on your candle as the source of truth.

Quick checklist

Trim wicks to 5 to 7mm

A shorter wick helps reduce soot and keeps the flame steady.

Let the first burn reach the edges

A full melt pool helps prevent tunnelling and supports an even burn.

Burn 2 to 4 hours max

Long burns can overheat the jar, leading to smoking or wick mushrooming.

Keep away from drafts

Drafts can cause flickering, soot, uneven wax and weaker scent throw.

Use a snuffer if possible

Snuffing reduces smoke. If blowing out, do it gently.

Stop at 10mm remaining

Discontinue burning when about 10mm (1cm) of wax remains at the bottom.

How to burn your candle properly

Before you light

  • Trim the wick to 5 to 7mm before each burn.
  • Place the candle on a flat, stable, heat-safe surface.
  • Keep the wax free of debris (matches, trimmings, dust).
  • If your candle has multiple wicks, light them all every time for an even melt.

During the burn

  • On the first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges.
  • Keep away from open windows, fans, and air vents.
  • Do not burn longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • If the flame is high, flickering, or smoking, extinguish, cool, trim wick, and relight.

Extinguishing and aftercare

Extinguish cleanly

  • Use a snuffer when possible to reduce smoke.
  • If you blow it out, blow gently and steadily.
  • Do not use water to extinguish (hot wax can splatter).
  • Allow the candle to cool fully before moving.

Reset the wick

  • While wax is still soft (not liquid), gently re-centre the wick if needed.
  • Trim again before the next burn.
  • Cover the candle when not in use to reduce dust buildup.

Troubleshooting

Soot on the glass

Extinguish and let the candle cool. Wipe the inside of the jar with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Trim the wick and relight away from drafts.

Tunnelling (wax not reaching the edges)

Next burn, allow enough time for a full melt pool to reach the edges. Avoid drafts. If tunnelling is severe, stop using and contact support for advice.

High flame or flickering

This usually means the wick is too long or the candle is in a draft. Extinguish, cool, trim the wick, and relight in a calmer spot.

Weak scent throw

Make sure the wax pool reaches the edges (especially on the first burn) and avoid drafty areas. Large spaces may need a larger candle size.

Safety essentials

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Keep candles away from anything that can catch fire (curtains, bedding, books, decorations).
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Burn on a stable, heat-safe surface. Do not burn if the vessel is cracked or damaged.
  • Do not move the candle while wax is liquid. Let it cool completely first.
  • Stop burning when about 10mm (1cm) of wax remains in the bottom of the jar.
