Fresh is not the word most people attach to oud, yet that is the promise in the name of Black Collection Fresh Oud. The first minute is bright and sharp, with Calabrian bergamot and bitter grapefruit lifted by cardamom, saffron and a thread of cinnamon bark, so the dark wood arrives with a cool, spiced edge instead of a heavy cloud.

Behind the citrus, white jasmine, Bulgarian rose and iris keep the centre floral and slightly powdery, and then the base closes in: oud, sandalwood and cedarwood, patchouli and amber, a touch of leather and cashmere wood, with vanilla and white musk smoothing the finish. It comes from the Barcelona house's Black Collection, wears warm rather than smoky, and a 100mL bottle gives you room to wear it often.
